Seymour Youth Football and Cheer

1. What is American Youth Football & Cheer (AYF/AYC)?

AYF/AYC is a nonprofit organization founded in 1996 that promotes youth development through football and cheerleading. It supports over one million participants across 50 states and several countries, emphasizing positive role models, academic achievement, and community involvement.

2. Who can participate in AYF/AYC?

Kids of all backgrounds, typically aged 5–18, can join.  AYF/AYC is inclusive, offering opportunities regardless of financial status or athletic ability. There are also programs for special needs and at-risk youth.

3. What types of football and cheer programs are offered?

    •    Football: Tackle football with age-based divisions (7U, 9U, 11U, 13U) and flag football options.

    •    Cheer: Competitive cheerleading with age based teams (6U, 8U, 10U, 12U, 14U) and Tiny Mites

4. Do participants need prior experience?

No experience is required. AYF/AYC welcomes beginners and provides training resources to ensure everyone can participate and grow.

5. What is the National Championship?

AYF/AYC hosts the largest youth football and cheer tournament in the world in Florida each December. Teams qualify through regional events, competing in age-protected divisions for national titles. Football teams play at least two games, while cheer squads perform in front of large audiences.

6. Are coaches required to be trained?

Yes, especially for national events. Head coaches must complete certification courses like the CDC Concussion course and AYF-specific training (e.g., “Coaching Youth Football the AYF Way”). Training is encouraged for all coaches to enhance safety and experience.

8. How does AYF/AYC ensure player safety?

Safety is prioritized through age-based divisions, equipment standards, and mandatory coach training on topics like concussion awareness. Guidelines promote a competitive yet safe environment.

9. What are the benefits of joining?

Participants gain leadership skills, teamwork, confidence, and community involvement. AYF/AYC also offers scholarships, academic awards (e.g., Scholastic All-Americans), and access to camps, clinics, and discounted gear.

10. When does the season typically run?

The season varies by region but often starts in late summer (August) and runs through fall, culminating in the National Championships in December. Spring flag football is also offered in some areas.

11. Can teams travel?

Yes, AYF/AYC supports inter-mural play and has members in multiple countries. The National Championships and All-Star Games (e.g., 8th Grade All-Star Game) offer travel opportunities within the U.S
